Memories Of Feeling by nancekievill Memories Of Feeling by nancekievill
EDIT: Wow! I got a DD!! OMG! Thank you DA, and thank you everyone for your comments and praise! Getting a DD was on my bucket list - never thought I'd actually get one!

Painting steps here

A few months back I found myself reading Neuromancer by William Gibson. I was totally blown away by the book and have since gone on to read a number of his other novels. I really love the the cyberpunk world that Gibson conjures up and I felt inspired to paint something from that rich and gritty universe.

A particular image from Neuromancer that I couldn't get out of my head was the description of a bartender called Ratz and his prosthetic arm: "It was a Russian military prosthesis, a seven-function force-feedback manipulator, cased in grubby pink plastic". For some reason this imagery stuck with me, and it became the core subject and inspiration for this painting.

I was keen that my painting should echo Gibson's 1980s view of the future, and therefore the technology should seem beyond our time but have a retro feel for a modern audience. I designed the robotic arm to be functional but awkward and clunky looking. I felt that to be realistic the arms required a power source that the user must carry around - implanted. The wiring and cables are untidy and exposed, and the ribbon connector to her head is inspired by the old peripheral connectors that you used to see on printers from the 80s and 90s.

The whole prosthesis installation is functional but not pretty, except for the metallic-pink paint job. This, I hope, captures the essence of cyberpunk.

Wow this is fantastic. I have a similar body and hair style, and I have a robot band called the attackbots who when i'm with i essentially think of myself like this, except with blue hair. i like the relative gender ambiguity since i'm a trans girl so i straddle such lines.

Thank you, glad you like it.

I think for a book that was written in the 80s, it holds up pretty well.

Excellent fan art, I might have to pick up the book now.  Are her arms like prototypes for cyborg technology?

Hey, thanks for looking.

I would defo read the book. Despite the novel's age, the universe contained within feels timeless*. It's a real treat.

She is definitely a cyborg, and I guess my vision was for these arms to be a prototype - hence their clunky awkwardness. I'm glad that message came across clearly.

* There are these things called "Microsofts", which are microchips that people plug-into themselves. At first I couldn't get my head round this turn of phrase as I kept thinking of our old friend Bill Gates and his juggernaut OS. There are a few more instances of weird terminology, but it makes sense in the end. Worth checking out this glossary whilst reading the book: link.

Inspiration for the drawing did you well, but I can't escape the feeling that I'm watching a test subject for an augmentation experiment. The pain is strong in this one and that emotion you captured is pure art.

I feel I can't take all the credit - you should go visit the photography of Errikos Andreou which helped inspire this piece. However art is sometimes about spotting opportunities and merging different elements together* to produce something greater than the sum of the parts. I like to think I managed that with this painting.

Thanks for commenting. :)

*Just for clarity, I mean in the figurative sense - not the literal (i.e. no "photo-bashing" here).

I found the reference pic on his site. Despite the same pose, your painting sends a completely different message and, to use your terms, you merged the elements in a right way to create it. A normal hand touching a shoulder is one thing, but bionic hand touching a shoulder is something completely different, isn't it? Details count and I like your attention to detail.

In general, I like to admire other people's creativity whether they were inspired by something or it simply came to their mind.

Cheers! :)
